We mounted ours on top of the dash.
It is a perfect spot because you can reach it easily and plot waypoints along the trail.

There is a Garmin external antenna mounted on the roll bar.

Also I hardwired in a power cord and data cable that attaches to the back of the GPS III.
We occasionally use Delorme street atlas 6.0 software on our laptop to give better info.
