Camp Rover is a premier program dedicated to enhancing and promoting off-road driving tactics and skills. It is open to Land Rover owners and guests from across the country. It is a three-day program structured to teach vehicle preparation, driving, recovery and extrication techniques to drivers of varying skill levels, vehicle types and off-road interests. At Camp Rover, campers will be exposed to the ultimate off-road experience. Camp Rover features off-road instruction by some of the nations leading driving instructors and former Camel Trophy drivers, as well as, guided trail rides over hundreds of miles of trails in the scenic setting of the East Tennessee mountains, which offers some of the best off-road trails in the country. Camp Rover is designed to offer challenges for varying levels of driving skills — from beginners to veterans. And for all Lands Rover vehicles— from old Series, Discovery, Defender and Range Rovers.

Camp Rover is not just another event where owners come together and hear about the vehicle or drive a small skills course. It is truly an opportunity to learn about your vehicle — its capabilities and limitations, and how to prepare for and drive off-road by professional instructors. Campers will have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with instructors. Instruction will be given in a group setting and on a capabilities course to teach various techniques that will then be utilized driving various off-road trails. Instructors will also participate in the trail rides providing one-on-one instruction along the trails. Camp Rover ’99s lead instructor is Bill Burke, owner of 4-Wheeling America and former Camel Trophy Driver. Bill is considered one of the country’s leading instructors on off-road driving and recovery techniques.

There will also be a specially designed capabilities course set up to demonstrate various off-road situations, thereby letting you practice various driving and extrication techniques. It will also demonstrate where various vehicles accessories like suspension enhancements or winches are appropriate. The course will be staffed with counselors on Friday and Saturday during the day.

TRAIL RIDES

Every Camp Rover trail is rated from level I (easiest) to V (most difficult). The ratings are based on trail overall, not just one or two tough spots.

LEVEL I — relaxing scenic ride with a few challenging spots. Four wheel drive needed occasionally.
LEVEL II — moderately demanding trails. You may encounter a wide variety of challenges, including mud holes, boulders and stream crossings, on the trail. Four wheel drive needed. Stock vehicles with ample tread on tires.
LEVEL III — moderately demanding trails. The likelihood of getting stuck is considerable. Mud holes may be deep and rock climbing will be arduous. Four wheel drive needed. Stock vehicles with aggressive off-road tires. Winches and underbody protection recommended.
LEVEL IV — very demanding trails. Four wheel drive needed. Winches and aggressive off-road tires, rear air lockers and modified suspension required. Underbody protection recommended.
LEVEL V — the most demanding trails. Four wheel drive needed. Winches, front and rear air lockers, aggressive off-road tires at least 33", and modified suspension, 2" lift required.

PARTICIPANTS AND VEHICLES

Camp Rover will have both first time off-roaders, wanting to learn more about their vehicles, how to prepare them for off-road driving and beginning driving techniques and veterans with years of experience wanting to understand how to perform field repairs. NO matter what your skill level there is much to learn and there will be people happy to help you along.
All Land Rover vehicles are capable of participating at Camp Rover. The driver’s specific experience and vehicle setup will determine which trails you can participate. Regardless of the rating and your experience level, you’ll get plenty of help to meet the challenge. Before you ever driving the trails you’ll get instruction beforehand, detailing how best to handle the terrain and conditions you’ll encounter on the trails. Although trails with higher ratings are obviously more difficult, you get help and expert advice from your counselors along the way.

Every effort is made by Camp Rover to make the trails as safe as possible. Campers are advised to closely follow the instructions given by trail leaders and spotters. Howe ver, there is the possibility of damage to your vehicle when traveling over rough terrain. Any damage is the owner’s responsibility. When selecting a trail level, remember the higher numerical difficulty rating are more likely to involve terrain which may contribute to vehicular damage. Participants will be required to sign a waiver form
.

VEHICLE PREPARATION AND SAFETY INSPECTION

We require that all vehicles be in good working order and have a full size spare tire and seat belts. Roll bars are also required for vehicles without a factory hardtop — this primarily applies to older Series and Defender vehicles. We recommend vehicles have tow hooks front and rear (receiver hitches are acceptable as an alternate to rear tow hooks), heavy-duty, 20’- long nylon tow straps (20,000 pound minimum) with looped end (no hooks) and fire extinguisher. It is suggested you bring a CB radio, a small cooler (Absolutely no ALCOHOL will be allowed during any instructional or trail events), insect repellent, and a camera. Also we will make trail coordinates available for those utilizing Global Positional Systems (GPS). On the Level I and Level II trails we will do our best to do trail maintenance and clear the trails of any obstacles likely to cause surface scratches. It is still recommended that you have a coat of hard wax applied to provide an extra measure of protection. Each vehicle will be required to undergo a safety inspection and have a Camp Rover Inspection Sticker before participating in the instructional or trail rides. All we require is that your vehicle is in good condition with good tires, seat belts and brakes. The safety inspection will help to insure that vehicles are in good working order and determine if it is capable to participate at a certain level. This helps minimize breakdowns at the event and delays on the trails. We will be doing safety inspections during the day on Friday and Saturday. Those individuals interest in having an inspection done in advance should contact Leah Phillips, at (615) 783-1748, to determine if there is a location near you performing safety inspections.
