March 2002

My goal was to make it DOT approved and street legal even though I cannot drive past 32mph (top speed) and restore the original color and get rid of the Smurf blue.

Back home in Houston and after a good battery charging it fired right up.  Being in the 70s and sunny helped a lot too.

It spent a few years in the U.K. because of the plates.  (if anyone has any history on this Unimog E-mail me please)

Here is Mike B. and I taking it for a spin.

I found out it has a 3 way tilt bed.  How cool.

A OM636 4 cylinder diesel made by Mercedes.

Here is the model & spec tag.

The fuse boxes was original and has 6 fuses per box.  It used those old European style that I had a hard time to locate.

Gauges & knobs that I do not know what for.

With the dog house cover removed the engine & transmission is exposed very well.

Now that's a battery.

There is a lot of rust from the age.  But we will fix all that.

This model had hydraulic assist steering.  This is a great option.

With the hood removed surprising there is a lot of working room.

On the passenger side there is a large hydraulic reservoir.

It was sprayed blue without good masking.

After a good cleaning to remove all the mud & grime it was not as rusted as I thought.

Now to remove the blue paint.
